BIRD CORPORATION ANNOUNCES DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE ON-SITE ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION BUSINESS

DEDHAM, Mass., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph D. Vecchiolla, president and acting CEO of Bird Corporation (NASDAQ: BIRD), today announced the company's decision to withdraw from its "on-site" environmental remediation business during the first half of 1994.
According to Vecchiolla, "Steps will be taken during the first quarter to withdraw from the company's on-site remediation business headquartered in Houston, Texas. It is important to note, however, that this action will not interfere with the company's planned operations at the San Leon, Texas Petrochemical Waste Recycling Center which is in the final stages of construction. The Recycling Center is expected to commence its operations shortly."
Vecchiolla also stated, "We are taking this step in the best interests of our shareholders. The once promising on-site remediation business, focused on providing services at waste generators' facilities has not materialized for our company. By exiting this business we expect to increase our opportunity at the San Leon Recycling Center because our previous competitors in the on-site service arena will be more likely to use San Leon's alternative disposal capabilities.
"We are narrowing our focus on San Leon as a specialty niche in the environmental industry that we expect can be profitably exploited by Bird. In recent months, we have exited from our environmental engineering, bio-remediation, and municipal sludge operations in order to focus our environmental management and resources on the San Leon Recycling Center. The facility represents a $14 million investment for Bird and is designed to provide a more cost-effective method of petrochemical waste disposal than the current practice of incineration.
"Going forward, we will concentrate our efforts and investments primarily on our core housing operations which have been historically profitable. The outlook in housing for both building materials manufacturing and distribution is very favorable. This strategy will eliminate the substantial losses previously incurred by our more expansive environmental activities."
Vecchiolla further announced that he expects Bird's fourth quarter loss to be significantly larger than previously anticipated; he was unable to comment on the size of the loss because the impact of the decision to exit on-site remediation has not been fully quantified. In addition, he indicated that disappointing results from Environmental Group operations and the company's vinyl replacement window joint venture also would have a negative impact on the quarter.
The company indicated that it does not believe the fourth quarter results or its decision to exit the on-site remediation business will have any negative impact on its ongoing negotiations with its banks regarding the previously announced technical default on its line of credit.
Bird Corporation, founded in 1795, is primarily a manufacturer and distributor of building materials with nearly $200 million in annual sales.
