BIOTECH PROGRAM PICKS UP FUNDING.

The new biotechnology program at Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  has received two grants, totaling more than $430,000, as the 2-year-old department continues to receive state and national recognition.

In recent weeks, the small but growing biotechnology department has received $339,000 from the National Science Foundation and $91,683 from the state, said Maureen Harrigan, head of the department.

Harrigan credits the program's success to its ability to focus on the manufacturing side of biotechnology.

``We are one of only three colleges in the state that are teaching biotechnology in the context of manufacturing,'' said Harrigan.

The grants will be used to buy new lab equipment, develop joint programs with other colleges and pay salaries for the department's three staff members, including Harrigan.

The program, which graduated its first group of 12 students last month, trains technicians for entry-level jobs An entry-level job is a job that generally requires little skill and knowledge, and is generally of a low pay. Harrigan hopes to expand the program by hiring another faculty member and increasing student enrollment.
