BIOSYS AND SDS BIOTECH K.K. SIGN DISTRIBUTION/MARKETING AGREEMENT

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- biosys (NASDAQ-NMS: BIOS), a manufacturer of biological insecticides, announced that an agreement has been signed with SDS Biotech K.K. (SDS) granting SDS exclusive rights to market and distribute biosys' nematode-based products to the commercial turf market in Japan. SDS is a joint venture company of Sandoz Ltd., Switzerland, and Showa Denko K.K., and is a premier pesticide company in Japan.
"biosys and SDS have worked together for the past three years to confirm the efficacy of biosys' products to control the most important insect pests affecting commercially grown turf, especially on golf courses," said Dr. Venkat Sohoni, president and chief executive officer of biosys. "In Japan, governmental restrictions on the continued use of chemical pesticides on golf courses have created an attractive opportunity for biological insecticides and we believe biosys' technology to be a viable alternative."
"SDS has tested biosys' products for the past three years and will market the products with confidence," said Kinya Futakuchi, general manager of SDS. "We have, together with biosys personnel, satisfied the requirements of the Japan Plant Protection Association concerning the efficacy, safety to the environment, and commercial feasibility of the nematode technology. We believe these products will enhance the SDS product portfolio, allowing golf course managers a means to control insect pests without hazard," Futakuchi concluded.
A registration package has been presented to the Japanese Regulatory Authorities and product sales will begin upon the final ministry approval.
biosys' products will be distributed by SDS under the brand name BioSafe(R) and are based upon the naturally occurring organisms, beneficial nematodes. These are microscopic worm-like organisms that have the ability to seek out and kill insects in the soil, i.e. armyworms, cutworms and billbugs without contaminating ground water, and without jeopardy to humans, pets, animals or aquatic life. Because the nematode is deemed to be safe to the environment, biosys products are currently exempt from registration requirements by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as in several European countries. biosys currently markets nematode-based products throughout Europe and the United States through major distribution partners.
biosys is a leader in the development and commercialization of biological pesticide products for the control of a wide range of insect pests. The company recently announced that a letter of intent had been signed to acquire AgriSense, a developer and marketer of pheromone-based insect traps and lures, as well as other biopesticide technologies and products. Using advanced science and technology, the company develops and manufactures biological controls that are highly effective in large- scale commercial usage. biosys holds patents for the manufacture of beneficial nematodes in liquid fermentation and their formulation for commercial use. biosys shares are trades on NASDAQ/NMS with ticker symbol BIOS.
