BIOSANTE REPORTS POSITIVE ORAL INSULIN STUDY RESULTS.BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTCBB-BTPH), Lincolnshire, Ill., has reported positive results of pre-clinical testing of its calcium phosphate (CAP) delivery system for the oral delivery of insulin. The pre-clinical trial evaluated the use of BioSante's CAP drug delivery system to administer therapeutic drugs orally. The oral formulation of insulin was developed by aggregating caseins around a proprietary formulation of CAP with polyethylene glycol polyethylene glycol (PEG): see glycol. (PEG) and insulin by scientists at BioSante's research center in Smyrna, Georgia. The therapeutic efficacy of the formulation, known as CAPIC CAPIC Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communications CAPIC Canadian Association for Production and Inventory Control (Region 8 of APICS) CAPIC Caring About People International Corporation , was tested in diabetic mice. A single dose of CAPIC was administered by mouth to diabetic mice whose blood glucose levels blood glucose level, n level of glu-cose in the bloodstream, normally about 70 to 115 mg/dL after fasting overnight. Higher levels may indicate diseases such as diabetes mellitus. were monitored for 12 hours following the treatment to assess the hypoglycemic hypoglycemic /hy·po·gly·ce·mic/ (-gli-sem´ik) 1. pertaining to, characterized by, or causing hypoglycemia. 2. an agent that lowers blood glucose levels. effect. When administered into the stomach, CAPIC rapidly reduced the blood glucose levels by 80 percent within the first hour of treatment and reduced glucose levels were maintained throughout the 12-hour blood-sampling period. In contrast, the same amount of insulin alone reduced glucose levels by only 20 percent in the first hour and by only 30 percent within five hours, after which time blood glucose blood glucose Diabetology The principal sugar produced by the body from food–especially carbohydrates, but also from proteins and fats; glucose is the body's major source of energy, is transported to cells via the circulation and used by cells in the presence increased sharply to baseline. "This is our first report of research using CAP for oral delivery of therapeutic proteins, and the results are very promising," said Stephen M. Simes, president and chief executive officer of BioSante. "The study indicates that our CAPIC formulation may protect insulin from degradation while passing through the acidic environment of the stomach until it is reaches the less acidic medium of the small intestine small intestine Long, narrow, convoluted tube in which most digestion takes place. We believe the CAPIC formulation using casein casein (kā`sēn), well-defined group of proteins found in milk, constituting about 80% of the proteins in cow's milk, but only 40% in human milk. and CAP may represent a new and unique potential system for the oral delivery of insulin and other therapeutic proteins." About Bio-Air(TM) and Bio-Vant(TM) BioSante's proprietary calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CAP) are vehicles for delivering drugs and vaccines more efficiently, and enhancing their therapeutic effects. BioSante is developing Bio-Air(TM) using CAP to improve the delivery and therapeutic effects of proteins, including insulin. Bio-Vant(TM) is being developed using CAP as an adjuvant adjuvant /ad·ju·vant/ (aj?dbobr-vant) (a-joo´vant) 1. assisting or aiding. 2. a substance that aids another, such as an auxiliary remedy. 3. to improve the safety and efficacy of vaccines. About BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. BioSante is an emerging pharmaceutical company developing a robust pipeline of hormone replacement products to treat hormone deficiencies in men and women. BioSante also is developing its nanoparticulate-based platform technology (CAP) for novel vaccines, vaccine adjuvants (Bio-Vant(TM)) and drug delivery systems (Bio-Air(TM)).
