BIOQUAL Announces Award of a Seven Year Infectious Disease Research Support Contract for $6.3M.

The contract entitled "Facility for Animals Used in Infectious Disease Research" totals $6,298,647 and extends for seven years to February 2007.

The contract supports research animals and assists NIAID scientists in the identification and biological characterization of certain respiratory viruses and influenza viruses influenza virus

, the illucidation of the pathogenesis of the diseases, the epidemiology of infection and the immune mechanisms that play a role in resistance to these viruses, the development of vaccines to intercede in these infectious and preclinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of these vaccines.

This is the third (of three) contract renewal with the NIAID since December, 1999. The three contracts total $30,731,800.

As reported in our February 1, 2000, news release, BIOQUAL recently renewed its contract to support NIAID AIDS researchers. That contract entitled "Care and Housing of AIDS Research Animals" totals $10,798,411 and extends for seven years to January 2007.

The AIDS contract supports research animals and assists NIAID scientists to understand the pathogenesis of AIDS in monkeys naturally or experimentally infected; to evaluate candidate AIDS vaccines AIDS vaccine A hypothetical vaccine intended to either prevent HIV infection or ensure that those infected will not fall victim to AIDS; the most promising vaccine is that using a naked DNA plasmid, reported by Letwin et al in 20/10/00 Science; as of early 2001,  for protective efficacy in macaques; and to perform preclinical evaluation of AIDS drugs.

Finally, as reported in our January 14, 2000, news release, BIOQUAL renewed its contract to support NIAID hepatitis researchers. That contract entitled "Care and Housing of Hepatitis Animals" totals $13,634,742 and extends for seven years to December 2006.

The hepatitis contract supports research animals and assists NIAID scientists to characterize human hepatitis viruses, to study hepatitis virus pathogenesis and develop methods for prophylaxis prophylaxis (prō'fĭlăk`sĭs), measures designed to prevent the occurrence of disease or its dissemination. Some examples of prophylaxis are immunization against serious diseases such as smallpox or diphtheria; quarantine to confine .
