BIO and Pennsylvania Bio Recognize Hubert J.P. Schoemaker at BIO 2005; Centocor Co-Founder and Founder of Neuronyx, Inc. Honored at BIO Board of Directors Dinner; Pennsylvania Bio Announces Annual Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Leadership Award.PHILADELPHIA -- Among a group of his peers, some of the most noted biotechnology CEOs in the nation, Hubert J.P. Schoemaker, co-founder of Centocor and founder of Neuronyx, Inc., was recognized by the Biotechnology Industry Organization and Pennsylvania Bio on Monday, June 20th at the BIO Board of Directors Dinner at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. The dinner took place as part of the BIO 2005 international conference being held in Philadelphia June 19-22. Pennsylvania Bio honored Dr. Schoemaker in January with its first-ever lifetime achievement award, sponsored by BIO. As part of Monday's recognition, Pennsylvania Bio announced that the award would be renamed the Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Leadership Award, recognizing annually the greatest contributions to the industry by a member of the Pennsylvania biosciences community. "BIO is tremendously proud to recognize Dr. Schoemaker for all of his contributions to this industry. He is a globally recognized pioneer in the biotechnology industry, and we are pleased to partner on this recognition for a man who has accomplished so much. His leadership has had an enormous impact on the growth of the industry, but it his influence is most noted through the patients whose live have been dramatically improved through his work," said Ray Briscuso, executive director of BIO. "Dr. Schoemaker has had a profound impact not only on the biotechnology industry in Pennsylvania, but the industry globally. We are proud to stand with BIO at its Board of Directors meeting to recognize again this man who has inspired so many in our community to become leaders and innovators in the biosciences. His presence is felt at many of the companies in this region that are now led by executives who learned at Dr. Schoemaker's side," said Fritz Bittenbender, president of Pennsylvania Bio. Dr. Schoemaker is among the biotechnology industry's leading scientists and entrepreneurs. He founded Centocor, Inc., one of Pennsylvania's first biotechnology companies as well as one of the industry's great successes, in 1979, serving as chairman of its Board of Directors until 1999. In 1999, following the acquisition of Centocor by Johnson & Johnson, he founded Neuronyx, Inc., a development-stage biopharmaceutical company located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. As chairman of Centocor, Dr. Schoemaker was responsible for identifying, developing and commercializing diagnostic and therapeutic products, as well as providing oversight and direction on scientific and technical issues. But it was his strong business skills that enabled him to guide Centocor from a fledgling start-up to a profitable publicly traded company. He shepherded Centocor through a major setback in 1992, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not approve the company's first drug, to its 1994 success, when the FDA approved ReoPro Re·o·Pro (r ![]() ![]() -pr (R), a drug to reduce heart attacks in patients who have had angioplasty, and its 1998-99 milestone when the FDA approved Remicade(R) for Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. In 1994, he was diagnosed with a fast-growing and usually fatal brain cancer, but he became one of just a handful of adult survivors. A true entrepreneur, Dr. Schoemaker then turned his attention to founding his second company, Neuronyx, Inc., where he is currently a director. Dr. Schoemaker holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a founder and co-chairman of the Board of the Technology Leaders Venture Capital Fund, directing Technology Leaders I and Technology Leaders II. He has made enormous contributions to the community as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Franklin Institute, the University of the Arts, and the National Research Council Committee on Japan. Dr. Schoemaker is a member of the Melmark Board of Directors, among many others. He has delivered more than 100 presentations, and has contributed more than 20 articles to publications.
