BILLY HAILS HIS GOLDEN GOAL; THE Homecoming Scotland SCOTTISH CUP ST MIRREN 1 MOTHERWELL 0.

Byline: By Anthony Haggerty

BILLY MEHMET Billy Mehmet (born 3 January 1984) is an Irish professional footballer for Scottish Premier League club St Mirren.

A London born forward, Billy began his career with West Ham United where he was captain of the youth team before transferring to Dunfermline Athletic F.C.

Mehmet struck five minutes from time to dump Motherwell out of the Homecoming Scottish Cup The Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup[1], usually known as the Scottish Cup, is the national cup knockout competition in Scottish football. It earned manager Gus MacPherson's side a cashladen home quarter-final showdown with Celtic on March 7.

And Saints can expect to bank around pounds 150,000 from live Sky TV coverage and gate receipts from a capacity crowd. Mehmet said: "That was one of the most important goals of my career.

"It was memorable for me because it gave us our first win here at St Mirren Park.

"I had missed a chance just before I scored and thought it would be the only one I would get.

"I'm delighted to have helped the team into the next round and the game against Celtic will be another big one for us but we will go into it full of confidence.

"And you never know what can happen in the Scottish Cup.

"Anything can happen on the day and if we get a goal against Celtic then who knows."

Mehmet likened his vital strike to the goal he scored against Motherwell in a 3-2 victory that guaranteed Saints SPL safety back in 2007.

He added: "That was probably the most important one I have ever scored.

"But it was nice to score this one as it means to much to the club and, of course, brought us that first win at the new stadium."

The Buddies have less than 48 hours to prepare for a grudge match tomorrow against Hearts who refused to switch the game to the Sunday after St Mirren accepted the Sky cash to have last night's tie beamed live.

Mehmet insisted that the Paisley side will have an extra spring in their step for the clash.

He said: "It is tough to have to play the game against Hearts so soon after this one.

"But it is our job and hopefully we can go out and get all three points at Tynecastle.

"This result will give us a huge lift to our confidence."
