BILL WOULD EXPAND OPTOMETRISTS' SCOPE.

The Assembly sent a bill Friday to the governor's desk that would allow optometrists to diagnose and treat some eye diseases, ending years of "turf battles" with eye doctors.

There are 3 Australian educational institutions offering degrees in optometry. The first two are five year bachelor level degrees, that incorporate the therapeutic management of ocular disease.
 but not medical doctors, have contended they are well-trained and should be allowed to diagnose and treat some eye diseases and dispense some drugs. Forty-six other states allow this to some extent.

But ophthalmologists, who are eye doctors with medical degrees, have always opposed such expansion of optometrists' duties, saying they do not have enough training.

The bill would allow optometrists who are trained and certified See certification.  by the state Board of Optometry optometry (ŏptŏm`ətrē), eye-care specialty concerned with eye examination, determination of visual abilities, diagnosis of eye diseases and conditions, and the prescription of lenses and other corrective measures.  to diagnose and treat some specified eye diseases and dispense certain drugs.

The bill also states that the Legislature will not consider any other expansions of optometrists' practice for four years.

The bill was approved 55-0. The Senate previously approved it.
