``Both California and the nation have been the site of numerous mass murders committed using these weapons,'' Koretz said in a statement. ``We have the potential to save lives with every one of these weapons we can take off our streets.''

The one-year buyback plan, supported by Attorney General Bill Lockyer and various police unions, was also endorsed by Baca.

``These military-style assault weapons are often the guns of choice for gangbangers and drug dealers we encounter every day,'' Baca said in a statement.
