BIKERS TO RAISE MONEY AT RIDE.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

More than 2,000 motorcyclists are expected at Sunday's annual Downed Officer Support Ride to benefit the families of slain peace officers.

The ride is scheduled to begin at Accessories Unlimited in Newhall with registration from 8 to 10 a.m. A memorial and invocation for fallen officers is slated for 9 a.m.

``This is special,'' said Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  sheriff's Sgt. Bob Norlemann, the event's creator. ``This is for the families of all the officers that have lost their lives and we are expecting more than 2,000 riders, a far cry from the 300 riders we had in the first year.''

As a twist to the ride, Norlemann said, people can even participate by driving cars along the route if they don't have motorcycles.

The highlight of the ride promises to be the 80- to 100-mile poker run A Poker run (also known as a Poker Derby) is an organized event using a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation where participants travel over a predesignated route and, at designated stops on the route, draw playing card(s). .

At the start, each rider will be given a playing card. Riders will receive four more individually at secret locations along the path until everyone has a five-card poker hand. Prizes will be awarded for the best hands, Norlemann said.

``It's always fun. We thought the poker run added excitement to the event,'' Norlemann said.
