BIKERS RALLY FOR MOTOCROSS SITE.

Byline: Kerry Cavanaugh Staff Writer

Motocross motocross

Form of motorcycle racing in which cyclists compete on a closed course marked out over natural or simulated rough terrain. Courses vary widely but must be 1.5–5 km (1–3 mi) in length, with steep inclines, hairpin turns, and mud.
fans from across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  came to the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

on Monday in support of a controversial plan to build the city's only motocross course on a piece of the old Penrose Landfill in Sun Valley.

Dump neighbors, however, railed against the proposal during a zoning hearing Monday, saying they'd been promised a golf course and scenic parklike setting on the 71-acre property. They said they didn't want the noise, dust and traffic from a 10-acre motocross track.

``There's a stigma of having a motocross (course) in your neighborhood,'' said Stephen Chulak, who lives down the street from the landfill. ``This would be a public nuisance public nuisance n. a nuisance which affects numerous members of the public or the public at large, as distinguished from a nuisance which only does harm to a neighbor or a few private individuals.  ... it would be nice to start preserving the community.''

Consultants for the landfill owner, Los Alamitos-based L.A. Byproducts, and the course developer, John Foley John Foley may refer to:

  • John R. Foley, U.S. Congressman from Maryland, 1959-1961
  • John P. Foley, judge on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, 1978-1984
  • John P. Foley, president of University of St.
, said homes are 700 to 900 feet away from the proposed course and neighbors would barely hear the motorcycles from their yards.

``It would be hard to find a more ideal site for a practice motocross facility,'' noise consultant Rob Harrison said Monday.

The old landfill closed in 1991 and sits on the line between a heavy industrial stretch of Sun Valley and a residential neighborhood. Under a 1982 agreement with then-Mayor Tom Bradley Noun 1. Tom Bradley - United States politician who was elected the first black mayor of Los Angeles (1917-1998)

facility, installation - a building or place that provides a particular service or is used for a particular industry; "the assembly plant is an enormous facility"
that would include a ``parklike setting'' attractive to neighboring properties.

Last year, L.A. Byproducts dropped its plan to build a truck parking lot and storage yard on the same spot after Councilman Tony Cardenas and City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo opposed the project on the grounds that it violated the golf course and recreational use agreement.

The company returned with the motocross proposal, hoping to find a recreational use that would still be profitable for the owners. The company already has a driving range and a remote-control model-car course on the land.
