BIKE TO WORK A FRIENDLY COMPETITION.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Dozens of local businesses will take part Thursday in Santa Clarita's fourth annual Bike to Work Day Challenge, a friendly competition to encourage alternative transportation.

The event, part of a statewide effort to cut down on driving, will see which businesses can get the most out of riding bicycles to work.

The pit stops will be open from 7 to 9 a.m. in the City Hall lobby, at 23920 Valencia Blvd.; the city's corporate yard, 25650 Rye Canyon Road; Valencia; and on trail accesses at Newhall Avenue and 16th Street in Newhall and Camp Plenty Road and Soledad Canyon Soledad Canyon is a long narrow canyon / valley located in Los Angeles County, California between the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita. There are three categories of competition: small-business employers with two to 10 full-time employees, medium with 11-100 employees, and large employers with 100 or more.

The businesses with the highest participation rate in each category will win frozen yogurt for its cyclists. Santa Clarita Transit is offering free bus rides to cyclists that day. Riders can place their bikes on the bus racks on the bus and show their helmets to the driver when they board.
