BIKE RIDE A HEALTHY CHALLENGE FOR HOME RESIDENTS.Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer Eleven boys and three men set off Friday on a two-day, 120 mile bicycle ride from Long Beach to Mexico, finishing the last leg of a ride that started in August at the Oregon border. Challenging boys and young men with experiences like a long-distance bicycle ride is a way to keep them from seeking excitement in crime, said Emmett Murrell, from whose Palmdale boys' home most of the participants come. ``You have to have adventures,'' said Murrell, who has run the boys' home for 15 years. Departing from west Palmdale before dawn Thursday in a van pulling a trailer loaded with bicycles, the group was to pedal from Long Beach to San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. Averaging 60 miles a day isn't hard, said 13-year-old Rasheen ``Chris'' Watson, grandson of the home's independent living coordinator, Lowell White. ``It's like in your blood,'' said Watson, who estimates he rides his bicycle 15 miles on weekends. Twenty-five years ago, White and Murrell themselves cycled to Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. to raise money for the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. The Murrell home's first long ride came in 1993, when boys cycled from Lancaster to Washington, D.C., trying to raise money for computers for the home's then-new independent living program. That ride seemed to make such an impact on the boys that Murrell decided to incorporate similar long-distance rides into his program.
