BIKE COMMUTE DAY TO FEATURE PEDAL POWER.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  may have a culture built around cars, but the lifestyle has left a legacy of traffic congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

So saying, public transit officials are sponsoring a group bicycle ride Thursday between the Metrolink stations in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Chatsworth as part of California Bike Commute Day.

``Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  is not necessarily a bicycle-friendly city,'' said event organizer Aaron Hanson, noting the dearth of bike paths, the dangers of sharing the road with speeding cars and a lack of public facilities for bike riders.

Three dozen commuters are scheduled to take part in the ride, held to coincide with National Bike Month. , said Hanson.

Bike riders can either board Metrolink trains in Simi Valley or pedal the sometimes uphill route to the Chatsworth depot. ``We designed the event so they don't have to be a super cycling stud to get over the Santa Susana Pass Santa Susana Pass is a mountain pass connecting Simi Valley to the San Fernando Valley.

The road used to be an Indian trail, and later a wagon road (a famous part was called Devil's Slide) before the road was paved.
,'' Hanson joked.

Those who opt for the train can stow their bikes on board, and then ride them from the Chatsworth station to their jobs, Hanson said. The more ambitious of the Bike Day group will pedal over the pass.

The latter group will pedal east on Los Angeles Avenue, south on Kuehner Drive, east on Santa Susana Pass Road, south on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, east on Chatsworth Street, south on Canoga Avenue and west on Lassen Street to the Chatsworth train station.

The depot has lockers for bicyclists, just one amenity that commuters need to convince them to leave their cars at home. Hanson said people won't even consider riding their bikes to work unless they have access to showers at their office or membership to a nearby health club.

``It really depends on how the employer is equipped. If (riders) don't have access to a shower or a way to clean up once they're at work, then it's really difficult,'' he said.
