CANYON COUNTRY - A new BigLots store is opening today in Canyon Country and will offer residents everything from discounted shampoo shampoo

``There's a lot of excitement,'' said store manager Chuck Sears. ``We've had to bar the doors to keep people out.''

For years, Canyon Country residents complained bitterly about having to fight cross valley traffic on Soledad Canyon Soledad Canyon is a long narrow canyon / valley located in Los Angeles County, California between the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita. ``There aren't a lot discount options in this part of town,'' Sears said. ``We're happy to fill that need.''

City officials are also hopeful that the new BigLots store - which replaced the Howes Supermarket that closed about six months ago - will help boost Santa Clarita's sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. The store is on Soledad at Whites Canyon Road.

The 42,000-square-foot store will be about twice the size of most BigLots, because of the pent-up demand in Canyon Country, Sears said.

``With all the new growth, there are new homes that need furnishing and new babies that need toys,'' Sears said. ``We're looking forward to saving everyone money.''
