BIGGER ENROLLMENT = BIG VICTORY?; IMPROVED QUARTZ HILL HOPES TO STOP POTENT L.A. BAPTIST PASSING ATTACK.

Quartz Hill High School's football opener against visiting small-schools power L.A. Baptist should prove an intriguing in·trigue

. Quartz Hill, 3-7 last season, has improved and features a huge offensive line. It's led by major prospect Chris Bishop (6-foot-6, 285 pounds), veteran two-way starter Bryan Hilterbran (6-2, 235) and heralded transfer Clint Mayer (6-3, 290). The Division II Rebels are considered a primary Golden League contender.

L.A. Baptist is a North Hills private school with an enrollment of 531. The Division XI Knights compete in the Alpha League - nearly every member of which recently competed in eight-man football Eight-man football is a type of American football, generally played by small high schools. Rules and formations vary greatly among states and even among different organizations, but the one constant is eight players from each team on the field at one time, as opposed to eleven-man .

But L.A. Baptist, 7-4 in 1996, is traditionally talented at the skill positions, especially this season with two-time All-Southern Section quarterback Peter Dirksen and fleet-footed wide receiver Tim Feirfeil.

Dirksen completed 122 of 216 (56.5 percent) passes for 2,039 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. Feirfeil caught 50 passes for 844 yards and five touchdowns and was also a threat on reverses, rushing for 139 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

``We know they're going to air it out,'' said longtime Quartz Hill coach John Albee, ``and if we have a weakness, it's our secondary. Hiram Johnson Hiram Warren Johnson (September 2, 1866 – August 6, 1945) was a leading American progressive and later isolationist politician from California; he served as Governor from 1911 to 1917, and as a United States Senator from 1917 to 1945.  is the only returner back there. They're the ones who offered to play us.''

Considering L.A. Baptist returns 16 starters, perhaps the Knights are not such a long shot.

``This game is certainly a significant challenge,'' coach Mark Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

for Division XI - the offensive line averages 236 pounds.

``Our team is looking good,'' said Bates, in his ninth season. ``We've worked hard this summer and did very well in passing league. We've improved quite a bit.''

Quartz Hill probably plans to control the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

Josh Levine, the Rebels' most productive returning receiver, managed just 10 catches for 84 yards and one touchdown in 1996.

In the final analysis, Quartz Hill's enrollment of 2,600 is a difficult advantage to overlook and makes the Rebels a substantial favorite.
