BIG WEST NOTEBOOK: CSUN GETS RESPECT.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

IRVINE - Markus Carr is gone but coaches and media think enough of Bobby Braswell's 10 returning players that the Cal State Northridge basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Big West Conference preseason polls this season.

The Matadors tied for third in the Big West last season with Carr running the offense at point guard. Braswell hasn't decided who will replace him, but Curtis Slaughter slaughter

last year, is the likely candidate.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  returns Big West Freshman of the Year Ian Boylan, senior forward Lionel Benjamin and guard Joseph Frazier, among others. Braswell didn't expect his team to receive such praise this early.

``It surprised me a little bit,'' Braswell said. ``The big question that was asked was what will we do without Markus Carr? I think everyone realizes losing Markus is definitely a big blow for our program. Hopefully, it points out that people respect the job we're doing here and how hard the guys work.

``You figured that we're still the new kids on the block New Kids on the Block (later NKOTB) was a boy band that enjoyed enormous success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Assembled in Boston in 1984 by producer Maurice Starr, the members consisted of brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny  in the conference. We were picked sixth last year, so to see this is good.''

Those who pegged CSUN to do well probably took into account the signing of Oregon freshman Ben Sullivan, a 6-foot-10 center who's projected to be the next Brian Heinle, the best player from CSUN's NCAA Tournament team two seasons ago. Sullivan is Braswell's third center from Oregon.

``Ben's really surprised us with how well he's adjusted to our system,'' Braswell said. ``Brian Heinle was a big man who can shoot the 3 and we didn't have that last year. We'll get that again. Ben's playing extremely well. But we all know he's a freshman.''

During Wednesday's annual Big West media day, Braswell talked about how his team had no injuries. But in practice later that afternoon, junior college transfer John Clark John Clark is the name of:

Utah State has three starters back - notably Desmond Penigar, who was second in conference scoring - and nine returners. The Aggies won the regular-season conference title last year.

--All's well: UC Santa Barbara returns four starters, including two local players, from its NCAA Tournament team: Mark Hull (Hoover of Glendale) and Branduinn Fullove (Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. ).

said. ``It's different when you have as many returning starters as we do. You come back with a little bounce in your step.''

--Women's rankings: The CSUN women were picked to finish last in both polls. The Matadors don't return any players from last year's team, which is probably a good thing. CSUN won just two games last year and then-coach Frozena Jerro resigned early in the season.

The Matadors have all new faces, including first-year coach Tammy Holder.
