football team might have learned more Saturday, not from its 38-24 victory over Oklahoma State - what, really, did that prove? - but by looking at the scoreboard.

Cal 46, Michigan State 15.

USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  40, Colorado 3.

Oregon 55, Idaho 21.

Oregon State 47, UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas  17.

Stanford 63, San Jose San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
 State 26.

Sure, the Bruins made some nice improvements from the opener. Quarterback Cory Paus was more steady, the receivers more sure-handed and the special teams more, well, they were OK.

There are also some areas that need addressing, primarily the secondary (this week's special teams) but also generating a pass rush, more consistency on offense and big plays from special teams. The Bruins have two more games against teams they should beat - Colorado and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State - to work on these things.

Then the real season begins. First is Oregon State, which has its swagger back after crushing three stiffs. Next is Oregon, which could have replaced Joey Harrington with Joey Heatherington without slowing its offense. Then it's not-so-laughable Cal followed by Stanford, which scored its most points since 1981 with a backup quarterback playing most of the game.

UCLA might get a chance to boost the confidence of its secondary, but the defensive backs don't figure to get much work against Colorado, whom Colorado State quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt Bradlee Van Pelt (born July 3, 1980 in Owosso, Michigan) is a free agent quarterback in the National Football League. He transferred to Colorado State University from Michigan State University.  correctly pegged as the most overrated Overrated was a Horde World of Warcraft guild, based on the US Black Dragonflight Realm. On November 2 2006, the majority of the guild members were indefinitely banned from the game for use of (or directly benefiting from) a third-party "wall-hack", used to bypass content  No. 6 team ever. (Van Pelt, no doubt a future coach, also lamented not throwing the ball deep against UCLA). The Buffaloes completed 2 of 13 passes for 24 yards against USC.

The next week, against pass-it-all-over-the-lot San Diego State, the secondary will get more than its share of work. Aztecs quarterback Adam Hall threw the ball 60 times in Saturday's 39-28 loss to Arizona State.
