BIG TEN'S PLOY IS A BIG MISTAKE.

  COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Was the Big Ten Conference pulling a power play or simply incompetent when it announced Tuesday that No. 3 Iowa secured a spot in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game?

Although media outlets across the nation carried the story, a conference call was held Wednesday among the six major conference commissioners, bowl-game executives and officials because of confusion over the Big Ten's announcement.

``The Big Ten shouldn't have done that,'' a source said. ``They jumped the gun. That's a matter of debate where Iowa will go. That's not official yet.''

In all likelihood, when Saturday's college football games are finished, Iowa will be selected by either the Orange, Sugar or Rose bowls. But as of today, the subject remains open to debate.

Luckily, Mike Tranghese, BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957.  coordinator, exposed the Big Ten's premature announcement.

``Nothing should have been said; I think we embarrassed ourselves,'' Tranghese said. ``We're not going to render a final decision until Sunday.''

What motivated the Big Ten? Probably a fear of Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame , which operates under its own set of rules when college football is concerned and casts an especially large shadow in the Midwest.

The Big Ten tried to force the issue by making the announcement to increase pressure on the BCS to overlook the Irish, who are seeking an Orange Bowl bid.

.

The fact Kansas State is making a late bid for a BCS bowl isn't helping Notre Dame's case. Both teams went 10-2, but the Wildcats defeated USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  27-20 and the Irish fell to the Trojans 44-13, which strengthens Kansas State's case.

Though the Orange Bowl really doesn't want Kansas State, it might consider the Wildcats to avoid offending the Big 12 Conference and blowing apart the BCS.

. That might leave the Rose Bowl with either Colorado or Oklahoma, depending on who wins the Big 12 Conference championship game.

That no doubt would cause last-minute shuffling as the BCS searches for a more attractive opponent for the Trojans. A USC-Oklahoma game would be an easy ticket to sell, but it would deprive the Rose Bowl of its traditional Big Ten-Pac-10 matchup for the second consecutive year.

The Rose Bowl had no idea when it joined the BCS it possibly could be without its desired teams two years in a row.

He came to Colorado from Northwestern carrying a 35-45-1 record over seven seasons, and he is 29-19 in his fourth season with the Buffs. In spite of victories over Nebraska and Kansas State in 2001-02 and consecutive division titles, Barnett is hesitant to say the Big 12's balance of power has shifted.

``As soon as you write about it, it's going to shift the other way,'' he said. ``There's just too much parity right now to be able to create that kind of pattern, in my opinion. That pattern is sort of gone. I don't think it's going to exist like it used to. It is literally year to year.

``It probably is (a statement), but I don't want to make too much of it. I think winning back-to-back Big 12 (titles) would send a big statement.''
