BIG SUR BLAZE CREWS BATTLE HEAT, FOG.

Byline: Kevin Howe Scripps-McClatchy Western Service

A growing army and air force of firefighters continued battling a still-growing forest fire on the Big Sur Big Sur

Scenic region along the Pacific coast of California, U.S. It comprises a ruggedly beautiful stretch of seacoast 100 mi (160 km) long. Popular with tourists and naturalists, it extends southward from Carmel to the Hearst Castle at San Simeon.

The conflagration - dubbed the Wild Fire by the U.S. Forest Service - began Monday night near Highway 1 south of Lucia and has been burning steadily eastward between Mill Creek Mill Creek is an ambiguous placename used in the United States and Canada: Communities

 and Wild Cattle Creek since.

The first report came in at 10:20 p.m., ``an odd time for a natural fire to start,'' Forest Service spokesman Jim Youngson said. ``There's a good chance it was human-caused, either negligently or intentionally.''

Residents of the area reported that they saw other houses go up in flames, and the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade was preparing to concentrate its efforts on saving backwoods residences.

Coastal fog has also hindered air tanker and helicopter operations, Turner said, which the Forest Service and state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection crews are relying on to knock down the flames creeping through brush and timber in the steeply sloping terrain.

The fire had burned to 1,800-foot Alms ALMS. In its most extensive sense, this comprehends every species of relief bestowed upon the poor, and, therefore, including all charities. In a more, limited sense, it signifies what is given by public authority for the relief of the poor. Crews are working 12-hour shifts, he said, climbing to fire lines up 60-degree to 70-degree slopes, in 90 degree Fahrenheit heat, to the fire lines along 1,800-foot Alms Ridge.

A single paved road and two dirt roads are the only routes open to emergency vehicles, Turner said.

The paved road has been closed to all nonemergency traffic, he said.

``The south flank (Wild Cattle Creek) has us the most worried,'' he said. ``We're unable to get dozers in there to protect homes.''

Another fire in Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. As of Wednesday, the only injury among the 2,000 firefighters on scene was one sprained ankle, Turner said.
