BIG SCHOOLS: N.D. TRIES TO FILL 2,795-YARD VOID : KNIGHTS REGROUPING POST-FARGAS.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

The day was bound to come sooner or later. Nobody stays in high school forever, unless you're Vinny Barbarino and the Sweathogs.

Still, when Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  High opened practice last week, can you blame coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Amateur Boxing Career
Rooney won the 1975 147lb Sub-Novice New York Golden Gloves Championship. Rooney defeated Kevin Higgins of West Point in the finals.
if he secretly hoped that Justin Fargas Justin Fargas (born January 25, 1980 in Encino, California) is a football player in the NFL. Professional career
He was drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. As of 2006, he is the Raiders' second-string running back.
would show up for one more year?

Sorry, coach. Fargas left Sherman Oaks for Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, city (1990 pop. 109,592), seat of Washtenaw co., S Mich., on the Huron River; inc. 1851. It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as , Mich., and he takes his blazing speed, his 2,795 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior with him. He leaves behind a giant hole in the backfield. And the timing can't be worse, considering the Knights move from the Mission League to the Del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

 to Division I.

``No doubt it will be different without Justin,'' Rooney said. ``But we've got some good players, although we don't have that one superstar like we had when Justin was here.''

What Rooney will stress is that Notre Dame had great teams before Fargas showed up. When the Knights won the 1994 Southern Section Division III championship, Fargas wasn't on the team.

There is no reason to believe Notre Dame won't carry on now that Fargas has graduated.

But it will be tough. Fargas isn't the only standout to leave. Quarterback Dave DeMartinis is also gone, as are WRs Tony Arredondo and Rod Arzu.

The most immediate concern is who will replace Fargas and DeMartinis.

At running back, the Knights hope that quantity equates to quality. Instead of one go-to player, they'll divide the load between Chris Leon and Darren Barton.

At quarterback, Rooney will decide between Seth Oseransky and John Brewster John Brewster is an Australian guitarist who has played in the following bands:
  1. Moonshine Jug and String Band
  2. The Keystone Angels
  3. The Angels
  4. The Party Boys
  5. The Bombers
  6. The Fallen Angels
  7. Wayne Jury
  8. Angry Anderson Band
  9. Double Trouble
.

The two players drawing the most attention are WR/DB Todd Fenton, who caught 28 passes for 550 yards and nine touchdowns, and DE/OT Travis Johnson Travis Johnson (born April 26, 1982 in Sherman Oaks, California) is an American football defensive tackle for the Houston Texans of the NFL. He attended Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. , one of the top juniors in the country.

Johnson moves to tackle on offense after playing fullback last year, a position he has literally outgrown.

``We think that's where he can help us the most on offense,'' Rooney said.

Defensively, Johnson is a load.

Fenton will be the Knights' featured receiver.

Loyola, behind LB Andrew Altman, QB Chris Peterson, OT Scott Tercero Scott Tercero (born October 28, 1981) was an American football offensive guard.  and WR Christian Rhodes will challenge for the Del Rey League championship with Bishop Amat. In the Northern Conference, Eagle Rock coach Steve Wahl said this will be one of the most athletic teams he's had. Junior RB Rhuben Williams (6-0, 205) rushed for 703 yards last year and was all-conference.

Verdugo Hills was winless last season but returns three senior starters on the offensive line.

At Montclair Prepthe Mounties are rebuilding.

The most experience is on defense:

Ramon Johnson, a 6-foot, 178-pound senior, is the latest in a long line of defensive back standouts. ``A super hitter, exceptionally talented,'' said coach George Giannini.

Junior John Emilio, a 6-4, 240-pound defensive lineman, made Daily News All-Small Schools last year. He is strong and quick.
