BIG ROCK BREWERY REPORTS SALES GROWTH FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS
CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Big Rock Brewery (NASDAQ: BEER F) announced a 13.7 percent increase in sales for six months ended Sept. 30, 1992. To accommodate this growth, a new plant expansion doubling the capacity of the brewery began operation in September.
Net sales for the company increased approximately $3.1 million during the first half of 1991 to approximately $3.5 million for the same period in 1992. Cash flow provided by operating activities increased from $694,015 to $817,644, a gain of 17.8 percent. Cash flow per share increased from $.20 to $.21 or five percent.
In the six-month period ended Sept. 30, 1991, the company applied losses from prior years to reduce net income taxes by $176,000 to $29,700. There were no such losses remaining for 1992 and, accordingly, income taxes increased by $225,800 to $255,500 over the same period in 1991. Primarily, as a result of the increase in income taxes, net earnings decreased $77,109 or 12.7 percent over the same period in 1991. Net earnings per share decreased from $.13 to $.17 or 23.5 percent.
"Sept. 30, 1992 marks the anniversary of the seventh full year of brewing for Big Rock Brewery," said president, Ed McNally. "Our initiatives to extend product lines and distribute a diverse line of beers to specific regions in Canada and the southwest United States has captured a steadily increasing share of the specialty beer market."
During the past 12 months, Big Rock Brewery production has increased to approximately 56,000 hectoliters (1.5 million U.S. gallons) from 1991's 12-month total of approximately 47,700 hectoliters (1.3 million U.S. gallons).
In addition to the demands of increased production, Big Rock Brewery employees were faced with the added challenge of assembling an entirely new bottling, packaging and storing facility and removing the previous bottling line. The plant expansion has more than doubled the brewing capacity to more than 120,000 hectoliters (3.2 million U.S. gallons). To complete the expansion, larger fermenters will be added early in 1993.
"The start up of the new brewing facility in September was achieved without missing a day of brewing or compromising the consistent high quality of our beers," explained McNally. "Our staff did a truly remarkable job despite the difficult environment caused by the construction of the new plant and moving of equipment."
As previously reported in July 1992, Big Rock Brewery sold 700,000 shares through a public offering and the company used the proceeds to pay for the expansion and repay bank indebtedness. The ratio of assets to liabilities currently is at a healthy 5.6 to one.
Despite cool, wet weather in Big Rock Brewery's main Alberta market and a tough recession in Alberta, market expansion continues to increase the company's sales of specialty beers. By the third quarter, Big Rock Brewery expects to be shipping beer to British Columbia. Sales to Manitoba, which began in July 1992, are showing strong returns.
Headquartered in Calgary, Big Rock Brewery Ltd. was incorporated in 1984 as a regional producer and supplier of specialty draught and bottled beer. The company's products are primarily marketed in Alberta and Manitoba, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
