BIG RETAILERS' PROFITS STRONG.

Some of the nation's biggest retailers reported better-than-expected earnings Tuesday Tuesday: see week.  as the robust U.S. economy continued to encourage Americans to shop.

Strong sales at its Target discount stores boosted second-quarter profits for Dayton Hudson Corp. by 33 percent from a year ago. Profits at J.C. Penney Co. rose 14 percent, boosted by demand for its private-label clothes.

The Limited Inc.'s earnings doubled from a year ago, amid strength in its Express, Lerner New York New York, state, United States

 & Co.'s earnings gained as shoppers eagerly spent money on luxury items.

While the earnings reported Tuesday topped Wall Street analysts' expectations, most of the major retailers' stocks failed to post big gains amid concerns that they could be hit hard if the robust U.S. economy slows its pace.
