BIG RALLY IN FIFTH BAILS OUT 'HAWKS : JETHAWKS 12, BAKERSFIELD 5.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Blaze pitcher Fausto Macey figured to have a stress-free fifth inning and put himself in position to get a win for Bakersfield on Wednesday night.

Just when Macey was two-thirds of the way to finishing the required innings for a pitcher to be eligible for a victory, the resilient JetHawks snatched it away.

A bases-empty, two-out rally permitted the JetHawks to lead 12-5 in the ninth inning at press time.

If they're going to grab the Valley Division's wild-card playoff spot from Modesto and Stockton in the final 27 games, the JetHawks should clone their performance in the fifth inning.

Sandwiched between Macey getting the second and third outs, both recorded by Ramon Vazquez, eight consecutive JetHawks reached and six crossed home plate safely.

The rally was fueled by Anton French's walk. Brendan Kingman Brendan Kingman (born May 22, 1973) is an Australian baseballer.

then tied the game with a two-run homer, his 14th, over the left-field fence.

Jason Regan kept Macey on the mound with a double, followed by three straight singles by Cirilo Cruz, Matt Sachse and Luis Tinoco.

came out of the bullpen to make the lead stand up. Kelly started rusty, allowing the first two runners of the bottom of the fifth to reach before striking out Brett Casper, Joel Fuentes and Marco Pernalete in succession.

The JetHawks' tenacity in the fifth bailed out starting pitcher Joel Pineiro, who had an erratic performance, walking six and yielding five earned runs in four innings.

Through seven innings, Bakersfield had stranded eight runners on base.
