A signer of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and a delegate to the Continental Congress (1787), he served as governor of Massachusetts (1810-1811) and as Vice President of the United States Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer Taft basically played San Pedro even, but San Pedro came through with the key big plays. That was the difference in Taft's 24-9 loss in the City Section 4-A championship game Friday night at the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum. . Seeking its first-ever City title, the Toreadors instead settled for second place for the second consecutive season, having also lost to San Pedro 22-20 in last year's 4-A final. The Toreadors trailed only 10-7 late in the first quarter and had San Pedro trapped with a third-and-11 situation on its own 32-yard line. Taft couldn't recover. ``I really can't take credit for the run,'' Ramos said. ``Yes, I got by a couple of guys, but it was the offensive line that set up the hole. The blocking was great.'' In a hard-hitting, hotly-contested matchup, Taft could not counter such damaging blows with big plays of its own. Taft quarterback Steve Alvardo was accurate - connecting on 23 of 32 for 186 yards with one interception. But 13 of his completions were for six yards or less, and he was victimized by several costly dropped passes, three by Dominic Early. And Taft was just 3 of 4 in fourth-down situations, another major factor in the loss. Taft coach Troy Starr conceded con·cede v. con·ced·ed, con·ced·ing, con·cedes v.tr. 1.
