BIG PLAYS MIGHT MAKE DIFFERENCE.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer Long touchdowns have been a key for Taft of Woodland Hills this season, as the Toreadors (10-2) have relied more on speed and breakaways than brawn brawn n. 1. Many of the Toreadors' 63 touchdowns have been from 50 yards or longer. Quarterback Cary Dove, who has thrown for 3,078 yards and 33 touchdowns, averages almost 17 yards per completion. Steve Smith (80 receptions, 13 TDs), Paul Pratt (38 receptions, eight TDs) and Noah Smith (34 receptions, 14 TDs) are a threat to go all the way every time they touch the ball. Running back Justin Tryon (1,339 yards, 19 TDs) also is dangerous. Here's the catch: Dorsey of L.A. (9-3), Taft's opponent in Friday night's City Section Championship game at the Coliseum, has allowed only two touchdowns of 50 yards or longer. Something has to give. ``Taft spreads defenses out so thin with (its) speed that we have to eliminate big plays,'' Dorsey coach Paul Knox said. ``If we don't handle ourselves and stay in control, we'll leave ourselves vulnerable.'' NOT GOOD WEEK FOR ALL Of the four Southern Section schools that lost in the divisional semifinals last week, three were seeded favorites. Division IV Westlake, seeded No. 4, was surprised by Dos Pueblos of Goleta. In Division XIII, top-seeded Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and second-seeded Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:
``I think injuries finally caught up with us,'' Westlake quarterback Todd Feiereisen said. ``Of course we're disappointed, but we had our best season in school history,'' Campbell Hall coach Anthony Harris Anthony James Harris (b. 26 June, 1982) in Dunedin. CHAMINADE'S VOSE TO TRANSFER Chaminade of West Hills quarterback Erik Vose, expected to be a Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) is a college athletic conference which operates in the western United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I. Membership Full members recruit next season, plans to transfer to Westlake, a school which has been accused of recruiting violations in the past. But his father, Skip, maintains the decision has nothing to do with football. ``Erik wants to graduate in January so he can get on with his college education, and Chaminade sent me a letter saying they wouldn't allow him to,'' Skip Vose said. ``I tried to explain that Erik was a special case because he already has more than enough credits, and it would help him greatly to be at spring practice (in college). ``But Chaminade's theory is their school is `an eight-semester experience.' If they would have allowed us to graduate early, we'd stay.'' HART vs. VALENCIA FROME GETS AHEAD OF HIMSELF What was supposed to be Hart of Newhall lineman Chris Frome's big moment didn't work out last week against Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach Manhattan Beach, city (1990 pop. 32,063), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1912. But the play was ruled illegal because Frome wasn't eligible to catch a forward pass - only a lateral - because he wears No. 75; players with jersey numbers in the 70s aren't allowed to catch forward passes. Actually, Hart coach Mike Herrington knew the rule. The play was designed as a lateral, but Frome - who apparently had flashbacks of his Pop Warner Pop Warner refers to
``Chris was a little pumped up,'' the Indians' Chris Steck said. ``It was cool because I wasn't really expecting the play to be called so early in the game,'' Frome said. ``Yes, it was supposed to be a lateral. But I just started running toward the end zone.'' DID YOU KNOW? It wasn't the prettiest spiral Steck had ever seen, but he was so wide open he had time to wait for the ball. ``It was pretty scary. I didn't think that ball would ever come down,'' Steck said. ``But we saved that play all year and I think we used it at a pretty good time.'' Hart scored on the next play to stake a 21-point lead, eventually winning 35-6. TOUGH TASK Valencia knows it's encountering an ``us-against-the-world'' (or at least Hart of Newhall's world) mentality in the Division III championship Friday night at College of the Canyons. Valencia is 0-7 all-time against Hart, including a 26-0 Foothill League loss last month. Few give the Vikings much of a chance. ``I guess you're going to hear that until we do beat them,'' Valencia coach Brian Stiman said. ``So we have to go out there and play well. We've been notoriously known for playing relatively poorly, by our standards, against (Hart). We just do not have our best game, for whatever reason that is. I can't tell you. I can't give you one word or a sentence why that is.'' Valencia defensive lineman Brandon Fuselier, who has 19 sacks, doesn't want to let Friday's opportunity slip away. ``I think we all like the fact that we get a second chance to play them,'' Fuselier said. ``For all the seniors, we want to go out with a bang. We've fought hard to get here.'' WRESTLING WITH CHOICES Valencia lineman Alex Gottlieb, at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds the biggest player on the team, can't decide if he wants to be a professional wrestler or a football player. ``I like both, but right now I'm focused on football,'' said Gottlieb, preparing for the Division III championship against Hart of Newhall this Friday. Gottlieb's brother, Steve, was a professional wrestler who used the name Dread. His wrestling career was cut short because of a shoulder injury. PARACLETE vs. MONTCLAIR HAGERTY REUNION Steve Hagerty, who coached Paraclete of Lancaster to its first three consecutive section titles before leaving last season, had a chance to say hello to his old friends at the Southern Section championship-week luncheon Monday. EIGHT IS ENOUGH Paraclete of Lancaster (11-0) and Montclair Prep of Van Nuys (9-1-1), which play for the Division XII championship Saturday at L.A. Valley College, are the region's only teams to have played just eight regular-season games. As for their rivalry, the teams have met four times - three in the playoffs - over the past three seasons, and the Spirits have won every game. But Montclair Prep eliminated Paraclete from the Inland Conference playoffs in 1985 during a break in Montclair Prep coach George Giannini's 24-year career at the school.
