BIG NAMES NEED NOT APPLY; MONEY ISN'T THERE FOR TROJANS TO LURE A MARQUEE COACH.

Byline: SCOTT WOLF Scott Richard Wolf (born June 4, 1968) is an American actor.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Steven Wolf and Susan Enowitch, Wolf was raised in West Orange, New Jersey. He graduated in 1986 from West Orange High School.

There's a first-class job search being conducted by a major college this week, and it will never serve as a model for anything being done in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Texas, which wasted no time firing John Mackovic John Mackovic (born October 1, 1943 in Barberton, Ohio) is the head coach of the United States first national team for American football which was formed to compete in the American Football World Cup.  after the Longhorns' season ended, has put together a blue-chip list of candidates. Athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  DeLoss Dodds DeLoss Dodds is the current men's athletic director of The University of Texas at Austin. , North Carolina's Mack Brown, Miami's Butch Davis and either Arizona State's Bruce Snyder or Oklahoma State's Bob Simmons.

The lesson to be learned is none of those marquee names would be available to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  if it decided to hire a new coach, because the Trojans offer none of the perks - not to mention salary - that a school like Texas can.

Whoever is named coach at Texas - the Associated Press reported Wednesday night it would be Brown - will probably have a total salary package worth more than $1 million. Davis already earns more than $650,000 at Miami, which is more than any USC football coach has made.

Texas is also THE school in a football-mad state and owns the city of Austin, which has no other college or pro teams to compete with the Longhorns.

As they say in Texas, there are two sports: football and spring football.

With that type of atmosphere, it's easy to see why glamorous job searches are impossible in L.A., whether it's for UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 basketball or USC football.

Just take a look at USC's past three coaching changes. John Robinson was an Oakland Raiders assistant who had worked on John McKay's staff when he was hired in 1975. Ted Tollner was USC's offensive coordinator when he was hired in 1982. And Larry Smith was an up-and-coming coach from Arizona in 1987, without any real national stature.

That hardly sounds like a formula that would attract the likes of a Barnett or Snyder to USC. So when you hear USC fans throwing names like these out, it's nothing more than wishful thinking wishful thinking Psychology Dereitic thought that a thing or event should have a specified outcome . If USC makes a change in the next few weeks, it's more likely another eager offensive or defensive coordinator somewhere would emerge as the top candidate.

Faulty alliance: There are plenty of schools, including UCLA, disappointed about the way the alliance bowls seem to ignore rankings and look to fan support and/or TV ratings as the basis for selecting teams.

Well, don't expect it to be any better next year.

Although the alliance will match the No. 1 and No. 2 team in the Fiesta Bowl next season, the Sugar and Orange Bowls will look just as provincial when it comes time to selecting teams.

The bowls will not be any less petty about their selections, unless they specifically have the national-championship matchup.

Looking forward: Conceding it was a ``terribly disappointing season,'' Colorado's Rick Neuheisel is on the hot seat.

``I have a bad taste in my mouth,'' Neuheisel said. ``All I want to do is fix it and get on with 1998. What the record will be, I have no idea. But I will tell you this: We're going to play good football and we're going to get back into a bowl situation.''

As one remedy for the Buffaloes and his own problems, Neuheisel is - surprise - thinking of firing some assistant coaches. Neuheisel said no changes will be made before Christmas.

WAC WAC (Women's Army Corps), U.S. army organization created (1942) during World War II to enlist women as auxiliaries for noncombatant duty in the U.S. army. Before 1943 it was known as the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby.  woes: First a dream, now a nightmare?

That could very well be the scenario for the Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  championship between Colorado State and New Mexico on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Last year's inaugural game unfolded perfectly. WAC commissioner Karl Benson wanted two top-20 teams. He got them with No. 6 Brigham Young (13-1) and No. 19 Wyoming (10-1).

He wanted a sellout at Sam Boyd Stadium Sam Boyd Stadium is a football stadium located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The stadium is named after Sam Boyd.  won 28-25 in overtime. As a bonus, the game drew better TV ratings than the SEC and Big 12 championships in the ABC tripleheader.

This year, none of that will happen. There is only one top-20 team this year (No. 20 Colorado State). New Mexico is unranked in the Associated Press media poll and No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll.

Sellout? No shot. The Rams and Lobos haven't purchased 5,000 tickets combined. This, one year after BYU bought 18,000 alone. And there's practically no chance for a late out-of-town rush given the fact Las Vegas air-flight arrivals for Friday and departures for Sunday are sold out.

SCOTT WOLF'S TOP 10

1. Michigan (11-0) Alliance, what alliance? Wolverines control destiny.

2. Nebraska (11-0) Needs to run up score on A&M for pollsters.

3. Tennessee (10-1) Orange Bowl is just one potential stumble away.

4. Florida State (10-1) Sugar Bowl sounds nice, but Orange would be better.

5. North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). Facts and Figures

6. UCLA (9-2) If basketball fans attended bowl, Bruins would make alliance.

7. Florida (9-2) It must be nice when being ranked this high is disappointing.

8. Washington State (10-1) Least respected one-loss team in the country.

9. Ohio State (10-2) Sugar Bowl awaits Buckeyes, who preferred Fiesta Bowl.

10. Kansas State (10-1) 35,000 bored fans ready to travel to Fiesta Bowl.

Five more to watch: Texas A&M (9-2), Air Force (10-2), Missouri (7-4), Purdue (8-3), Colorado State (9-2).

BEST BET

No. 3 Tennessee (10-1) vs. No. 11 Auburn (9-2)

No one will be more interested in the SEC championship game than fans in Los Angeles. UCLA and USC will both be rooting for Auburn. UCLA needs Tennessee to lose for any chance of getting into the bowl alliance. USC wants the same result, just for a chance of getting into any bowl.
