BIG BEAR FIRE BURNS STRUCTURES.

A wildfire roared across 1,000 acres Saturday, burning 11 structures, prompting evacuations and shutting down a main route into the Big Bear Lake-Lake Arrowhead arrowhead, any plant of the genus Sagittaria, widely distributed marsh or aquatic herbs of the primitive family Alismataceae (water-plantain family). The name derives from the arrowhead-shaped leaves of many species.  resort areas.

It wasn't clear whether the burned structures were homes, but they probably were, said Ruth Wenstrom, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.

``I presume they're homes,'' she said. She knew of no injuries.

At 8:45 p.m. homes in the Running Springs communities were still threatened, Wenstrom said. There was no estimated containment time.

A recent Forest Service effort in the Running Springs area to clear brush from homeowners' properties probably averted worse damage, Wenstrom said.
