BIG BAND LEADER BERRY, 72.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Jazz cornetist, trumpeter and band leader William Richard ``Bill'' Berry died of cancer Wednesday at UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. It is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the United States and is the top hospital on the West Coast according to US News & World Report. . He was 72.

Berry, who resided in North Hollywood with his wife, Betty, worked with the bands of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Duke Ellington.

He joined Merv Griffin's television show in 1965 and formed his own big band in 1970. He served as musical director of the Monterey Jazz Festival Debuting on October 3, 1958, the Monterey Jazz Festival (MJF) is one of the longest consecutively running jazz festivals. It was co-founded by San Francisco jazz radio broadcaster Jimmy Lyons and his colleague, journalist Ralph J. Gleason.  for seven years.

He performed at the White House in a tribute to Duke Ellington's 70th birthday.

In 1999 he received the Distinguished Alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. A child which one has nursed; a foster child. Dig. 40, 2, 14.  Award from Berklee College of Music Berklee College of Music, founded in 1945, is an independent music college in Boston, Massachusetts, with many prominent faculty, staff, alumni, and visiting artists. It has an enrollment of approximately 3,900 students and a 2004 faculty of approximately 430.  in Boston.

Berry is survived by his wife, his son William of Englewood, Colo., and daughter Lisa McLaughlin of Tallmage, Ohio.
