BIG 'V' FOR VALENCIA VIKINGS HEAD TO BIG A FOR DIV. II FINAL VALENCIA 37, SAN CLEMENTE 7.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

For all those football teams that picked on Valencia in the past, the Vikings are showing that what goes around comes around.

Like a previously scrawny kid who had a sudden growth spurt growth spurt Pediatrics A period of rapid growth in middle adolescence; ♀ ↑ ±8 cm/yr ±age 12; ♂ ↑ ±10 cm/yr ± age 14; GS is orderly, affecting acral parts–ie, hands and feet grow before proximal regions, , Valencia is going one by one to confront the bullies that tormented it in the past.

First, Valencia stood up to Foothill League rival Hart of Newhall by beating the Indians for the first time. On Friday, the Vikings faced another nemesis Nemesis (nĕm`ĭsĭs), in Greek religion and mythology, personification of the gods' retribution for violation of sacred law; the avenger. II semifinals.

Valencia, in its ninth year of varsity football, isn't playing the role of little brother any more.

``This is a different team this year,'' Valencia quarterback Michael Herrick said. ``We're trying to build something at Valencia, and we're starting to get some respect.''

Advancing to a section final for the third time, Valencia (12-1) will play top-seeded Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

or Upland next Saturday at Angel Stadium. Valencia lost to Hart in its previous two finals.

With the win, the Vikings have the credentials for this to be the best season in school history. They've won their first Foothill League title, and Friday they set the school record for victories and, at the least, equaled their best playoff finish.

San Clemente (10-3) knocked Valencia out of the playoffs in the second round last year and in the first round in 2002.

This time around, San Clemente gave Valencia an early gift, and the Vikings never looked back. Valencia was forced to punt after three plays on its first possession, but the punt was fumbled and recovered by the Vikings' Gary Cox at the San Clemente 25-yard line.
