 new young people into higher education has been hailed a success in Huddersfield.

The University of Huddersfield's annual summer school introducing teenagers to university has just ended.

Year 11 and 12 students from across Yorkshire came to the summer school for a week of art and design activities.

The school is part of a government scheme to increase the number of students entering higher education from under-represented groups.

Liz Jack, the event's organiser, said: "The week is really to get them to open their eyes to what is available, because these guys have nobody to guide them about what university is like.

It was the seventh year the university's school of art and design has hosted the summer school and this year students had to wake up as early as 5am to attend.

In her speech at the end-of-week presentation, Penny Macbeth, the head of the design department at the university, said: "Everyone has brought a real buzz and enthusiasm here. The students have bonded very well, with lots of energy and laughter, and the standard of their work has been very high and professionally done.

"The summer school will bring a new perspective to our teaching."

Current and former students from the department acted as mentors across the week to provide insights into university life.

Ms Macbeth said the students had the potential to go into careers in fashion, film, animation and architecture and hoped they had "got lots of vision for their future careers".

One of the pupils, Carla Taylor, from Bridlington, said: "It has helped me decide to come to university, I definitely want to go now."

Another, Bekah Francis, said the week had given her an insight into university life.

During the week the students took part in classes in textiles and fashion, photography, interior design, animation, 3D design, digital media and contemporary art, as well as receiving careers advice.

Student Jadene Codner said: "It was good to try a variety of subjects and meet new people."

Lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors.  Network, was at the presentation in the university's new Creative Arts Building to give each pupil a certificate and award prizes for merit.

Former footballer Andy Booth Andrew "Andy" Booth (born December 6, 1973 in Huddersfield) is a professional footballer for Huddersfield Town in Coca-Cola League One.

The Early Years

"Boothy", as he quickly became known as, was born in Huddersfield, England.
 also made a speech as a Huddersfield Town ambassador at the end-of-week presentation.
