BICYCLING: PRO-TRAIL ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES 16 YEARS ON TWO WHEELS.

Byline: Bill Becher Special to the Daily News

CALABASAS - Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  mountain bikers would have a lot fewer trails to ride on if the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association hadn't been born 16 years ago.

The club, known as CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global , is a voice for mountain cyclists with local land-management agencies, fighting for equal access to trails. Its members also help build and maintain trails, teach newbies how to ride in the dirt at monthly free classes and sponsor rides for inner-city kids.

On Saturday, the group celebrated with a birthday bash that included a ``poker ride.'' Cyclists picked cards at five different ride stops at Malibu Creek State Park Coordinates:

and the 10 best hands won raffle tickets and prizes.

About 300 mountain bikers rode and checked out demo bikes brought by manufacturers including Giant, Rocky Mountain, Specialized and Trek. Local bike shops including REI and Sundance Cycles helped tune bikes. Trials riders demonstrated bike-hopping skills at lunchtime.

Nearly a third of the riders at the birthday party were women who can shred single track without copping an attitude.

Land managers seem to agree that mountain biking belongs on local trails.

Board member Michael Goodman said CORBA has had success this year helping to open bike riding at Two Foxes and Sin Nombre trails in Sycamore Canyon Sycamore Canyon is the second largest canyon in the Arizona redrock country, after Oak Creek Canyon. The 21 mile (33.6 km) long scenic canyon reaches a maximum width of about 7 miles (11.2 km) and is located in North Central Arizona below the Mogollon Rim northwest of Sedona.  State Park, the Rita Walters Rita Walters (1930-) is currently the commissioner of the Los Angeles Public Library.
