There was a brief follow-up contact that occurred this month, according to the same sources.

``All of my energy right now is spent on USC basketball,'' Bibby said Wednesday, when asked if he had been contacted about the Memphis job.

Johnson was not in his office Wednesday and Thursday and could not be reached for comment.

Johnson has said he has no timetable to name a coach. Memphis coach Tic Price Tic Price is a college basketball coach. This is the second time in three years that Bibby's name has surfaced regarding a Memphis coaching vacancy. His then-agent contacted Memphis officials in 1997, after coach Larry Finch Larry Finch (born February 16 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee) is a former player and coach for Memphis State (now called the University of Memphis) men's basketball team. Bibby said at the time he was ``interested . . . because of the money situation there. The money's a lot higher there.''

Price was eventually hired to replace Finch.

According to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, Johnson met with former New Jersey Nets coach John Calipari earlier this month.

Calipari told the paper that he talked to Johnson by phone and later met with him at an airport in an undisclosed city.

Johnson refused to confirm or deny the story.

Bibby has three years left on his USC contract, including this season. He received a raise in 1997, and is believed to make at least $300,000 per year. The financial package at Memphis is believed to be worth at least $400,000.

In his three-plus seasons at USC, Bibby has compiled a 48-48 record with an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1997 and National Invitation Tournament appearance in 1999.

USC just completed its nonconference season with a 7-5 record and opens Pacific-10 Conference play Thursday against Washington State in Spokane.

Two years ago, Bibby was also considered a candidate for the coaching position at Michigan.

Bibby recently joked about his job status during a press conference to announce that USC would build a 12,000-seat, on-campus arena by 2002.

``I'm very happy to be the first men's basketball coach in the new arena. We hope. Right Mike?'' Bibby said, referring to USC athletic director Mike Garrett.
