To continue to provide BHC customers with more information about their water, and to comply with new federal Safe Drinking Water Act The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is a United States federal law passed by the U.S. Congress on December 16, 1974. It is the main federal law that ensures safe drinking water for Americans.  regulations that require water utilities to deliver such information to customers beginning in 1999, BHC's report consists of 1998 water quality data, describes the company's water sources, how BHC protects the water at those sources, and how it treats and maintains the water's high quality through the distribution system. The report also summarizes test results for 90 substances, as required by law, from samples of the water supply. In addition, the report compares the quality of customers' tap water to state and federal standards.

As well, the report describes water system and infrastructure improvements that BHC has completed within the previous year. In 1998 BHC's invested approximately $12 million in its water system infrastructure to maintain and improve the quality and safety of the water. BHC's newest water treatment facilities utilize the best state-of-the-art technology to provide the most effective barrier against waterborne disease and contamination.

The report also includes educational information about the protection of BHC water sources; likely causes of detected contaminants in the water; bottled water; radon, a gas that occurs naturally in soil and makes its way into well water and the air in homes; and the Cryptosporidium cryptosporidium (krĭp'tōspərĭd`ēəm), genus of protozoans having at least four species; they are waterborne parasites that cause the disease cryptosporidiosis.  and Giardia Giardia /Gi·ar·dia/ (je-ahr´de-ah) a genus of flagellate protozoa parasitic in the intestinal tract of humans and other animals, which may cause giardiasis; G. lam´blia (G. intestina´lis) is the species found in humans.  parasites that have had severe effects on some individuals with weakened immune systems immune system

"Our water quality laboratory in 1998 performed more than 132,000 tests on samples of our water supplies," said BHC President and Chief Executive Officer James S. McInerney Jr. "We are proud to say that we go beyond the testing required by regulations to ensure that we are delivering safe, extremely high-quality drinking water."

Health officials say that consumers in Connecticut benefit from water quality protection standards that are among the toughest in the nation. For example, Connecticut prohibits waste discharges into drinking water sources, and BHC is among the water utilities that combine conventional disinfection disinfection,
