BG Energy Challenge to lend a helping hand.

MUSCAT Eoe1/4" The fourth edition of BG Energy Challenge 2010 Eoe1/4" Oman, which will be held from February 10 to 12, was formally launched by Nasser bin Khamis Al Jashmi, undersecretary, Ministry of Oil and Gas, at a ceremony yesterday on the Ministry of Oil and Gas premises.

Launching the event, Al Jashmi asserted that the event will provide an invaluable opportunity for team-building skills and a chance to serve the needy.

The challenge is an annual fundraising and industry-networking event hosted by BG Oman, a subsidiary of the UK-based BG Group plc. BG Oman is working together with Muscat Diving & Adventure Centre, OmanEoe1/4aos leading adventure tourism specialists, to organise the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Arshad Sufi, vice-president, Oman and Middle East of BG Oman said that the 2010 event will raise money for the National Association for Cancer Awareness (NACA) with the goal of enabling them to operate their mobile mammography unit for a full year.

Mobile unit

The mobile unit sends trained nurses, radiographers and counsellors to communities around the Sultanate, allowing people who have no means to get

to Muscat hospitals the opportunity to receive potentially life-saving early diagnosis.

As well as this, the unit enables NACA to spread awareness in people throughout the country.

Barka Al Bakry, vice-president of Al Noor Association for the Blind, outlined the activities of the association and updated on the upcoming Nizwa blind centre project. She said that RO100,000 which the association received from the BG Energy Challenge 2009 edition was good enough to plan a project like the Nizwa centre.

She further said that the foundation for the project, comprising administrative building, IT training lab, library and auditorium, would be laid in mid-December and assured that the building will be complete in a yearEoe1/4aos time.

Dr Wahid Al Kharusi, secretary-general of the National Association for Cancer Awareness, said he was grateful to the BG Energy Challenge 2010 for selecting the association as a beneficiary this year.

Seven-point plan

NACA is an officially registered and a recognised charitable organisation. ItEoe1/4aos seven-point objective plan includes creating awareness of all types of cancer, working with healthcare providers as a patient support group, fund-raising to assist in medical education and research and to work closely with

other local, regional and international patient advocacy groups as well as with government agencies.

Explaining the importance of early detection in treating cancer, Dr Wahid Al Kharusi said, Eoe1/4EoSpread the message that cancer is curable if detected early and our vision is to develop awareness and empower the patients with the required knowledge.Eoe1/4A[yen]

About the mobile mammography unit, which is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a digital mammography machine and a stabilising system, Kharsusi said that the unit will traverse the roads of Oman with the dual objective of providing women access to mammography screening and raising awareness in communities across the country.

This is the fourth time BG Oman has run this challenge in Oman. Last yearEoe1/4aos event involved 150 participants from 25 teams and raised RO100,000 for the Al Noor Association for the Blind. These funds are helping Al Noor provide permanent premises for the blind community of the Dakhiliya and Dhahira regions. These premises will feature new training rooms including a Braille educational room and IT lab. They will also feature functional and recreation areas including a library, offices and a gym.

RO2,500 per team

Participation in the 2010 event is open to companies and organisations from all sectors and industries. Corporate teams of four to six employees will endure a series of challenges set in the forts, wadis and on the lawns of Nakhal.

Prior to the BG Energy Challenge event, the first challenge facing participants is to raise a minimum of RO2,500 per team through their own fundraising events. All funds raised by the teams will go directly to the NACA.
