BFI TO BUILD TRANSFER STATION IN BIRMINGHAM; BREAKS GROUND ON NEARBY REGIONAL LANDFILL

HOUSTON, Texas, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. (NYSE: BFI), today announced the start of construction of an $8.5 million, 1,500 ton-per-day solid waste transfer station and recyclery in an industrial section of downtown Birmingham, Ala.
The waste transfer station section will operate 17 tractor-trailers to shuttle between the transfer station and BFI's new regional landfill in adjacent Walker County. The waste will come primarily from BFI collection operations in the Birmingham market, but the facility will also be open to the public, and to other private and public haulers.
Housed in the same facility will be a 10,000 square-foot recyclery to sort and prepare recyclable materials for market by baling or other processing methods. The recyclery uses a system of conveyor belts to route pre-sorted materials to appropriate holding areas or to the baler.
The BFI Pineview sanitary landfill, situated on 690 acres in Walker County, Ala., near Birmingham, received its operating permit from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management on March 12. The permit authorizes the use of 166 acres for landfill operations, at a limit of 1,500 tons per day, but it remains subject to litigation by a group opposed to the landfill. A trial in the litigation is scheduled for mid-May, but in order to insure construction in time to meet the Oct. 9, 1993 effective date for the applicable Subtitle D regulations, BFI broke ground on the landfill March 19. The landfill will have an anticipated life of 20 years and will serve a nine-county area.
Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. is one of the largest publicly-held companies engaged in providing waste services. Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes. BFI subsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource recovery facilities and medical waste services.
