BET Holdings appoints Byron Marchant senior vice president and general counsel.

 Debra L. Lee announced today that the company has appointed Byron Marchant, 39, to the position of senior vice president and general counsel, effective May 12.

Marchant had been a partner in the Washington, D.C. based law firm, Patton Boggs LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol , where he provided counsel to BET on various projects. In his new position, Marchant will oversee all of the legal affairs of BET Holdings and its subsidiaries, including the BET Cable Network, and he will report directly to Lee.

"We are very excited about Byron's addition to Bet's senior management team," said Lee. "His telecommunications and corporate expertise will be invaluable as we solidify our current position in the telecommunications arena, and continue to explore opportunities for BET Holdings."

Prior to joining Patton Boggs, Marchant was Sr. VP & general counsel for TeleCommunications Systems Inc. from 1994-1996; served as senior legal advisor to Commissioner Andrew Barret of the Federal Communications Commission Federal Communications Commission (FCC), independent executive agency of the U.S. government established in 1934 to regulate interstate and foreign communications in the public interest.  from 1989-1994; and was an attorney with Sidley & Austin from 1987-1989.

Marchant holds a J.D. from University of Virginia Law School and a B.S. in Engineering and Political Systems from the United States Naval Academy United States Naval Academy, at Annapolis, Md.; for training young men and women to be officers of the U.S. navy or marine corps. Marchant resides in Arlington, Va. with his spouse, Ann F. Walker and daughter, Rebecca.
