BESTOP WINS NEW BUSINESS TO SUPPLY SOFT TOPS
FOR KOREA'S KIA MOTORS' NB-7 SPORTAGE
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Bestop Inc. (NASDAQ: BTOP) has been selected by Kia Motors Corp., Korea's largest truck manufacturer, as the sole supplier of soft tops for Kia's new sport utility vehicle NB-7 Sportage, to be introduced early in 1994. Based on estimates from Kia, the new international business represents approximately $1.6 million in revenues for Bestop in 1994, with additional revenues for several years thereafter, depending on the order level.
Kia manufactures the Ford Festiva, and is 10 percent owned by that American automaker. The prestigious agreement was signed yesterday at Bestop's Broomfield plant by Kia representatives and Bestop officials.
Bestop will begin shipment of soft tops for Kia's NB-7 in October of 1993. Based on estimates by Kia, Bestop expects to manufacture approximately 12,000 units for the NB-7 in 1994, with similar amounts estimated for 1995 and 1996. The NB-7 is intended to be distributed in the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia over the next several years.
"We are excited to have yet another piece of the international pie," said Richard E. Sabourin, chief executive officer of Bestop. "This represents the third international OEM business arrangement for Bestop in the past 12 months. It is further indication of the strong growth opportunities for Bestop in the international market."
Based in Broomfield, Bestop is the leading North American designer and manufacturer of soft tops and accessories for small sport utility vehicles. Bestop is the pioneer in Jeep(R) vehicle soft tops with more than 40 years of experience in the industry, and is the sole supplier to Chrysler of soft tops for the Jeep(R) Wrangler. The company's automotive customers include: Chrysler, General Motors, CAMI (a General Motors/Suzuki joint venture), American Suzuki, Suzuki Canada, Daihatsu (Japan), and Santana (a 66 percent equity owned Suzuki venture in Spain).
