BESTIE'S VERY ILL; Rugby hero's fears as old pal George misses his 2nd bash in a week.

CONCERNS were growing last night that soccer legend George Best is battling serious illness.

The former Manchester United star pulled out of a publicity bash in Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff.  - the second cancellation in a week.

George, 54, was supposed to open a new restaurant belonging to his close pal, Welsh rugby star Barry John Barry John (born 6 January 1945 in Cefneithin, Wales) is a former Welsh rugby union footballer. He is considered by many to be the greatest fly-half in the sport's history, and became known as "the King". .

But he was unable to attend the ceremony in Cardiff.

Last night a worried Barry said: "I left a message for George to come but I knew deep down there was no point.

"He did not make it to an event at Old Trafford Old Trafford commonly refers to two sporting arenas:

  • Old Trafford (cricket ground), home of Lancashire County Cricket Club.
 the other day - and that is not like George Best.

"Take from that what you will.

"George has the greatest presence of any person I have ever known, but I fear he is extremely ill."

He said: "George is George I, king of Greece
George I, 1845–1913, king of the Hellenes (1863–1913), second son of Christian IX of Denmark. After the deposition (1862) of Otto I, he was elected to succeed on the throne of Greece.
 still recovering from pneumonia at his home but his illness is not life-threatening.

"A wine bar or restaurant is certainly not the best place for a recovering alcoholic to go to.

"I talked to George earlier today and he is on the mend.

"He was released from hospital several weeks ago and we expect to see him back in public life by the end of the month."

There was no answer yesterday at the Best home in Portavogie, Co Down.

One local said: "I haven't seen George out and about in a few days now, but as far as I know he is still recovering from that pneumonia he ended up in the City Hospital with."

Each of the guests was handed a free "Barry John" bottle of red wine.

George and Barry have stayed close since becoming good friends in the 1960s.
