BESTFEST '93 GETS A FLYING START

Thursday, Sept. 16, BestFest '93 gets a flying start. BestFest, a four-day celebration saluting Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport as "Best Airport in North America," as recognized by Business Traveler's International Magazine, begins with an hour-long press event Thursday,
Sept. 16, at 10:30 a.m. State, city, airport and county officials throughout the metro Atlanta area come together at the opening ceremonies to acknowledge and commemorate Hartsfield's enormous contribution to the city of Atlanta over the past 13 years.
In one of his last public appearances as mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson will officiate the ceremonies and unveil to the press, for the first time, Hartsfield Atlanta Traveler Magazine. Mayor Jackson opened Hartsfield on Sept. 17, 1980, in his first term as mayor. "Hartsfield has great significance to the city of Atlanta and to me personally. During my first term as mayor of Atlanta I clearly saw the need for a facility such as the one we have today. When we opened Hartsfield in 1980, my vision was to create a quality, international city. We succeeded in reaching that goal and are just beginning to see the ripple effect of Hartsfield's enormous contribution to Atlanta and her residents," said Mayor Jackson.
Hartsfield's celebrated award will be presented by Fran Gallager, publisher of Business Traveler's International Magazine. The captain of the Golden Knights parachuting team, the number one team in America, will be dropping into the party from an open-air vintage aircraft to assist Gallager in making his presentation to the mayor. The ceremony will include presentations from noted city, county and state officials.
Vintage aircraft, including two museum quality aircraft, both from Eastern and Delta airlines' early beginnings, will be on display at the kick-off. The airplanes exhibited will be just a taste of the 150 aircraft dating back to 1912 which will be on display to the public Saturday, Sept. 18. The exhibition will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Hartsfield center next to the old Eastern hangar.
