BEST-CHANCE CSUN TRIES UCLA AGAIN.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

They already know what they can't do. They can't play timidly. They can't be overwhelmed by the moment. And they know they can't be intimidated.

Now here's what they know they can do: win.

If ever there was a chance - a legitimate chance, that is - for the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team to beat UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, it's today. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (1-0) takes on No. 14 UCLA (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, informally and commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here.  in a game that could actually be a game.

The Bruins figure always to be the Bruins - loaded with talent. CSUN? The Matadors might never have the depth of a traditional power, but their program clearly is on the rise. It appears to have enough on paper to beat UCLA on any given day, something the Matadors have never done.

``It's a big one,'' CSUN coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  said. ``I think their guys are looking forward to it. I know we are. This game is not going to break or make our season. We know that. Win or lose, we still have to play the rest of our basketball games.

``We know it's an opportunity. Hopefully, as we tell our guys, these little opportunities throughout the season will lead to something bigger and better later on. I think we're really anticipating it.''

In fact, they can't wait because of what they'll bring to Pauley Pavilion. They return four starters - Brian Heinle, Markus Carr, Jeff Parris and Carl Holmes - from a team that narrowly missed out on an NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

And this year, with key additions John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. He played college football for Rice University.  and Joey Busch, they're favored to win the Big Sky Conference championship.

If the Matadors were ever going to pull off an upset . . .

what it was like in the past,'' Carr said. ``I played against them once and I thought we had a good shot then. I feel if we just do what we've gotta do, as far as executing and playing hard, anything can happen. Good things can happen.''

Two years ago, the Matadors went into the game with an upset in mind. They promptly got routed 114-97. UCLA went on a 20-0 run, built a 33-point lead and was never seriously challenged.

``We didn't really play as smart as we should've and we didn't really control the tempo of the game,'' Braswell said. ``We let it get away from us a little bit and I think that's why the score was so high at that particular point.

``This is a whole new team. You're talking about two years ago when Brian Heinle was a sophomore and Markus was a freshman. We're a lot further along than we were two years ago.''

True enough.

Parris is a force inside. Burrell, a transfer, is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Carr, a junior point guard, is among the nation's assists leaders and runs the show. Holmes is intense and Busch is a workhorse on the boards.

Busch had 21 points and 12 rebounds in his first start and Parris added 19.

``They've got a lot of experience,'' UCLA coach Steve Lavin Steve Lavin (born September 4,1964), a San Francisco, California native is a former college basketball coach and current ABC and ESPN TV analyst. As UCLA head basketball coach from 1996-2003, Lavin compiled a record of 145-78.  said. ``They're very similar to a Gonzaga or Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. The Matadors are well aware they're in trouble if they do.

``Basically, we have to go out there, play hard, play our game and not be intimidated by these guys,'' Busch said. ``We've just gotta go out there and play our style of game. They are UCLA, but we're not going to go in intimidated.

``We're all Division I schools. If we go in intimidated, we'll already be defeated.''

That's happened four times this decade. UCLA and CSUN have played every other season since 1992 and UCLA won all four meetings. The closest game was in 1992, when UCLA won 80-73.
