TELEVISION

TRIBAL BATTLE: In a poke at Mark Burnett's ``Survivor,'' ``The PJs'' reminds us that one can find plenty of dangerous, if not terribly exotic, locales without venturing at all far from home when Thurgood (voiced by Eddie Murphy) and 'hood residents play ``Soul Survival.'' (Tag line: ``Out of work, out of cash, out of luck.'')

Thurgood's wife Muriel wants to use the money to build a rec room in the basement for the kids; Thurgood wants the cash for himself. The Sanford and Sun tribes battle each other in a series of challenges - one involves eating sushi, something none of the competitors can comprehend - while Thurgood gets all Richard Hatch, ``cheating fair and square.'' ``Survivor's'' visual style is mocked in an inspired fashion in this fair funny episode, airing at 7:30 p.m. Sunday on the WB (Channel 5).

FILM

A DEAR OF A DIARY:!off ``Bridget Jones's Diary'' makes a surprisingly graceful transition from page to motion picture. Considering that there's nothing graceful about the lady in question, that's quite an achievement by itself.

And while we're talking unlikely accomplishments, how about that poised, skinny li'l Texas gal Renee Zellweger's spot-on portrayal of Bridget, the overweight, physically and verbally blundering poster girl for doomed British singlehood sin·gle·hood
n.
The state of being unmarried.
? She nails the neuroses and the accent just right as Bridget careens between the frosty affections of a desirable cad (Hugh Grant, never better) and a dependable prig (Colin Firth ... well, priggish).

While much can be said about the film's post-post-feminist emphasis on appearances and emotional neediness, and like most English rom coms it can get too cute at the expense of behavioral honesty, ``Bridget Jones's Diary'' is generally smarter and more credible than the average run of these things. And the legion of fans devoted to Helen Fielding's book will more than likely be v. pleased by how well it's all been translated.

STAGE

THE EMPHASIS IS ON 'COMEDY': It's pretty tough to suppress a grin or a belly laugh when faced with the kind of high jinks that are the stock in trade of the ``Comedy of Errors'' folks.

In addition to the pratfalls and goofy musical sound effects, the nine actors in Danny Scheie's ensemble at A Noise Within have to do some pretty brutal quick changes. At least I assume it's brutal whenever two characters played by the same actor have to talk to each other. Director Scheie's actors certainly don't make it look that way.

``Comedy'' is a romp from first stumble to last. What else do you expect of a play with two sets of separated twins each with the same name - being constantly mistaken for each other? Scheie ups the manic quotient by streamlining his cast (two actors play both sets of twins) and having everyone use a multipaneled box for maximum comic effect. As in most comedy, timing here is everything.

``Comedy of Errors'' plays at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and in rotating repertory through May 26. Tickets are $16-$40. Call (323) 953-7795.
