Dawnel Montana is the new Miss Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , crowned in ceremonies Thursday night.

Montana was among 15 contestants ages 17 to 23 who sought the title in the 19th annual community pageant.

Montana will receive a $250 college scholarship and a $500 wardrobe allowance.

The first-runner up was Nicole Santeramo; second, Caitlin Sonnenberg; third, Samantha Whitney; and fourth, Stacie Kruikshank, who also received the Miss Congeniality Award from her peers and the Spirit Award from the pageant director, Mardi Rivetti.

``The girls were at their best,'' Rivetti said. ``Their escorts, in most cases, were their fathers, who stole the show with their top hats and canes.''

Each couple performed a rehearsed routine as they walked down the aisle to the music ``Putting on the Ritz.'' Later in the pageant, each contestant walked down the runway with her mother as well.

The judges conducted a five-minute interview with each contestant that was worth 30 points based on personality and values. Other parts of the competition included swimsuit, formal wear and speech.

``There was a little more freedom allowed in the speeches this year with the use of props, or styles of delivery,'' Rivetti said. ``We let one girl sing her speech. One had a beautiful poem. They were all very creative this year.''

The total possible points were 100, which narrowed the field to eight semifinalists - the runners-up and Jennifer Redmond, Caitlin Jill Mardesich, Jane Truchinski and Samantha Whitney.

Before the event, each contestant was required to contribute at least eight hours to a community service project. Among the volunteer posts were the Castaic animal shelter, the American Cancer Society American Cancer Society,
