BEST IN CLASS; MOTORS: ROAD TEST: MERCEDES A200 CDI AVANTGARDE.Byline: By BILL McCARTHY bill.mccarthy@mrn.co.uk TWISTING your head to catch a glimpse of a new model is not a good idea, especially when you're doing 70mph, but A-Class owners simply could not resist. The head turning is the best measure of the A-Class transformation. The bland, square look has been dumped, the front is now sleek and streamlined and the rear end has had major surgery. A bolder grille, an increase in body length and new shaped windows has breathed life into the mini MPV Mini MPV (MPV stands for multi-purpose vehicle, although the full name is rarely used) is a car classification used in Europe to describe multi-purpose vehicles with a size close to superminis, fitting below the compact MPV and large MPV classifications. . The improvements have continued deep under the skin with decent handling - something distinctly absent on the old version - and precise, but light steering to match. It comes with a choice of four petrol and three diesel versions and the two-litre diesel power unit on the test model is full of surprises. Acceleration is very sharp, 0-60mph in under 10 seconds, but it's in mid-range that the power really kicks in. The old semi-automatic gearbox has given way to a a superb six-speed manual gearbox on the test model which is precise and easy to use. The cabin feels and looks more like a Mercedes. The three-door version, although looking sleek and smart, is a tad difficult to get into, which is not helped by the high, flat floor, but the four- door version would suit the older buyers and those with children and baby seats Standard equipment is more than generous across the range, with the entry- level Classic model boasting CD player, electric front windows, and steering wheel-mounted stereo controls. There is a step-up in spec from the Classic through to the Classic SE, Elegance SE and Avantgarde SE, and there is a long list of extras for people with very high expectations and very high bank balances. Safety equipment is above average with standard stability control on all models, anti-lock brakes and front and side airbags. The entry model comes in at just under pounds 14,000. An added bonus is that buyers can collect the car from the factory in Rastatt, Germany at no extra cost. Flights, overnight accommodation and return travel are all included in the standard delivery charge. There is just one more test for the German giants - convincing all those buyers to part with their readies in a fierce market. There's no doubt the A-Class is an expensive car, but fuel economy of around 50mpg from the diesel will soon start repaying the outlay and residuals should be good. The test model weighs in at an eye-watering pounds 19,000 plus, it carries the famous Merc star, be even so, at that price it needs to be good. |
