BEST, 94, WON ACADEMY AWARD IN 1949 FOR COSTUME DESIGNS.

Marjorie O. Best, an Academy Award winning costume designer, died June 14 at her Toluca Lake home. She was 94.

Best won an Oscar for her costume designs in ``The Adventures of Don Juan'' in 1949 and was nominated three more times: in 1956 for ``Giant,'' in 1960 for ``Sunrise at Campobello,'' and in 1965 for ``The Greatest Story Ever Told.''

``We'll miss her,'' longtime friend Jacqueline Johns said. ``She was an independent, dynamic, wonderfully active lady with a good sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

Best was born April 10, 1903, in Jacksonville, Ill., and came to Los Angeles in 1928 with her parents. She studied costume design at the Chouinard School of Art in the Wilshire District.

Her career began in 1943 when Warner Bros BROS Brothers

BROS Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society (London, UK) 
. bought the United Costume Co., where Best was employed. Warner Bros. offered her a position in its wardrobe department.

Best was a longtime member of the Costume Designers Guild The Costume Designers Guild (CDG) was founded in 1953 by a group of 30 motion picture costume designers. As of 1999, its membership includes motion picture, television, commercial, and stage costume designers throughout the world and totals some 470 members.  and the Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, also known as LACMA, is the official and world-renowned art museum of the County of Los Angeles, California, located on Wilshire Boulevard along Museum Row in the Miracle Mile vicinity of Los Angeles. .

Her other notable screen credits include ``The Nun's Story,'' ``The Left-Handed Gun,'' ``Rio Bravo,'' ``The Dark at the Top of the Stairs,'' ``Tender is the Night'' and ``State Fair.''

After many years with the studio, she became an independent designer, working for various studios.

Best was never married and had no children.

Services will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles. A date has not been set.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Braille Institute or the American Heart Association American Heart Association (AHA),
n.pr a national voluntary health agency that has the goal of increasing public and medical awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and thereby reducing the number of associated deaths and disabilities.
