BESSLER HOPES FOR '98 RETURN TO VAN NUY.

If Dave Bessler has his way, he will return as Van Nuys High School Van Nuys High School (VNHS) established in 1914, is a high school in the Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, California, belonging to the Los Angeles Unified School District: District 2.  girls' volleyball coach in 1998.

Bessler, who started the boys' and girls' programs 11 years ago, recently resigned as coach after his girls' team was disqualified dis·qual·i·fy

Bessler said he would resign if it meant the Wolves could participate in the playoffs next season. However, Bessler said he wants to return in 1998.

``I resigned for one year,'' Bessler said. ``The principal (Russ Thompson) wants me back. The parents aren't too happy with me resigning. . . . I stepped down to give my team a chance to play in the playoffs. I had already hinted at that. I told the principal that. I asked him what it will take to get the team back (into the postseason) and he seemed to know some things.''

City Section commissioner Barbara Fiege said she had spoken to Thompson but wasn't aware of the resignations.

Bessler said Angela and Melody Eckmier, who will be the top two returners next season for the girls' team, had looked into transferring if the team wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs. Jan Eckmier, the players' mother, said her daughters will stay.

``We did consider it,'' Jan Eckmier said. ``We talked it over with the children. Van Nuys is such an all-around good school, they wanted to stay with their excellent teachers and their good volleyball program.''
