BERT CORONA, CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER, DIES AT 82.

, died late Monday. He was 82.

A university teacher, labor leader and immigrant rights activist, Corona was executive director of the Los Angeles-based Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, which provides legal and educational services to Latino immigrants.

``He was a tireless leader,'' said Gloria Saucedo, who heads the agency's Blythe Street offices in Panorama City. ``Over the past few years, he has been working with the area's youth to make them leaders for the future.''

``He was loved and respected by the Latino community,'' said Vibiana Andrade, vice president of legal programs for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. ``He understood the struggles of immigrants, their dreams and hopes, and the good they bring to this country.''

Born in El Paso, Texas, in 1918, Corona arrived in Los Angeles in 1936 and was active in the labor movement as an organizer for the Congress of Industrial Organizations, and went on to work with braceros, field laborers from Mexico.

Corona died of complications after gall bladder gall bladder, small pear-shaped sac that stores and concentrates bile. It is connected to the liver (which produces the bile) by the hepatic duct.
