BERRY BATTLES BACK; COUNTRY STAR'S SUCCESS NOT WITHOUT ADVERSITY.

Byline: Daily News Staff and Wire Services

The life of Grammy nominee John Berry John Berry is the name of:
  • John Berry (congressman) (1833-1879), U.S. Representative from Ohio
  • John Berry (cricketer) (1823-1895 ), British cricketer for Yorkshire County Cricket Club
  • John Berry (footballer) (born 1965), English footballer for Torquay United
could pass for a country song.

Berry, who will headline Saturday at the Palmdale Fall Festival, has had his share of health problems. His legs were nearly crushed in a motorcycle accident in the 1980s, and several years later he underwent brain surgery to remove a tumor.

``I don't recommend brain surgery unless you really need it,'' said the 39-year-old singer.

Then, two years ago, he had an operation to fix throat problems that threatened his country music career.

``I'm starting to feel most comfortable when I'm wearing a hospital gown A hospital gown (also known as a patient gown, exam gown, johnny shirt or johnny gown) is a short-sleeved, thigh-length garment worn by patients in hospitals or other medical facilities. ,'' Berry said. ``But it keeps things in perspective; it makes you not take things for granted.''

Of Berry's eight albums, one has gone platinum. His hit song ``Your Love Amazes Me'' reached No. 1 on the country charts. His current CD, ``Faces,'' was released in 1996 and was his last album for Capitol.

Now Berry, who lives with his wife and two children in Athens, Ga., is negotiating with a new label and has booked studio time early next year.

``I'd like to put out the best album I can and have more people enjoy my music,'' he said. ``I want my music to be completely available.''
