``She just started, but Maria took the fundamentals and really went from there,'' coach John Derse said. ``For a girl in her position to be the No. 1 varsity tennis player is not common at all.''

But Berrera has overcome a lack in seasoning with natural skill.

``Maria is quite an athlete,'' Derse said. `She's a quick learner and she's quick on the tennis court.''

Berrera looks to improve on last year's fourth-place finish in Golden League singles competition.

Littlerock came in fifth place last year but figures to move up after graduating just one senior, Miranda Lockmiller.

``I think we'll be a lot better than last year,'' Derse said. ``We've got a strong team. We just need to get as strong as teams from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

``Mandi's been my best friend for 14 years,'' Kempenaar said. ``We're known each other since preschool.''

``We're like the same,'' Kempenaar said. ``We can predict what each other is going to do, and we have a lot of fun. We would never play against each other because we just can't compete.''

Kempenaar likes the way the team is shaping up.

``Everyone is coming along,'' she said. ``There's definitely a lot of improvement, and everyone is better. Plus, we've got some new players.''

``I think we'll do better because we're all seniors except for one,'' Miave said. ``We're getting along with each other better, and that should make us do better overall.''
