BERNSON WILL ASK COUNCIL TO PUSH FOR CSUN FOOTBALL.Byline: Harrison Sheppard Staff Writer Supporters of the CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge football program - threatened with elimination next year for budgetary reasons - appealed Tuesday to the Los Angeles City Council While the council has no jurisdiction over the state educational institution, Councilman Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , administration to continue the program. ``I think it's a great university and it deserves to have a continued football program,'' Bernson said. ``I would hope the chancellors and (trustees) ... will listen to what the people are saying and reconsider the pressure they put on the president to discontinue this program. It's important we continue to have this program in our community.'' Bernson has two daughters who attended CSUN and has attended football games there. He said he plans to introduce a resolution today asking the administration to keep the football program. On Oct. 1, CSUN athletic director Dick Dull recommended cutting football due to a growing deficit. The operating budget for football is $1.3 million a year. CSUN president Jolene Koester is expected to make a decision by Nov. 22. Bernson's statements came after some 30 supporters appealed to the council for help. ``A school of this size and of this influence, in one of the largest, most dynamic cities in the world, is worthy of a Division I athletic program and a Division I football program,'' said CSUN football coach Jeff Kearin. ``The city of Los Angeles
